Coe Creations-Stories to spark the imagination
Writing is magic. Through it, I can make a girl travel to another dimension where she battles her evil twin. I can help a lonely, misguided boy overcome his fear of the school bully and find his Zen. I can make a space kid named Carina Nebula solve the mysteries of the universe. Anything is possible when I write.
My first experiment with writing
In 2009, after a year of writing and collaborating with my dear friends, Sondra Brassel and Jenny Maloni, and the tireless support from my publisher Larry Genkin, The Friendship Puzzle Helping kids learn about accepting and including kids with autism released for distribution through Larstan Publishing.
Jennifer Maloni and her two amazing boys Dominic and Dylan served as the inspiration for the book. Jenny is a tireless advocate who has spent years working to improve the lives of children with autism. Through her, I have seen the joys, challenges and struggles of raising a child with autism. I continue to be in awe of her.
Sondra Brassel created the amazing illustrations for this book. Her attention to detail , use of vibrant color, and her desire to be a champion for our friend and this cause, helped bring this story to life. Her ability to channel what I was thinking often left me speechless (something that is very difficult to do!)
This experience gave me a first hand look into the process of creating a picture book from concept to copy. More importantly, it highlighted for me the importance of speaking out on topics that are so deserving of attention. This project has made me a better person.
It is our belief that education, research and information sharing are critical in understanding autism. We hope our book inspires others to learn about autism.
